Hiromi Oshima – Not Seeing is Believing

Photographers contact Playboy daily, hoping for a chance to shoot models and become part of the Playboy legacy. Two prominent blind photographers, Bruce Hall and Peter Eckert, contacted Playboy expressing their interest in working with us. We thought it was an interesting idea and agreed to give them the opportunity to photograph a Playmate, Miss June 2004 Hiromi Oshima. Shooting for Playboy turned out to be even more exciting than both Hall and Eckert imagined.

Bruce Hall is legally blind with five percent normal eyesight, complicated by a constant movement of the eyes that can’t be corrected with glasses. “Cameras, technology and other optical devices are a way to see detail I would otherwise never see,” says Hall, who has 30 years of underwater and nature photography experience. This Playboy shoot required use of his intuition and imagination. “As a scuba diver and a person who is at home in water, I wanted to shoot in, around and underwater. Some of these photos were taken at night. I am night blind, so I knew this would be a challenge—if not impossible,” Hall says. “Hiromi was a joy to work with. She is a total pro: exotic, beautiful and very comfortable in water.”

A trained carpenter and sculptor, Peter Eckert lost his vision as an adult due to the eye disease Retinitis Pigmentosa. He discovered photography after going blind, experimenting with the infrared setting on a ’50s Kodak camera. Eckert uses touch and “echo-locates” while shooting his subjects in the dark. Many of his conceptual photographs depict colored electric charges and light radiating from behind his subjects. “I wanted to stand on Playboy’s ideas and push further,” he says of this assignment. He does not read the Braille edition of Playboy although he notes that its availability in 1970 was a “pivotal point” in blind history. As one of Playboy’s first blind photographers, Eckert makes history himself by photographing Hiromi, whom he describes as an “angel spirit.”

Divini Rae is the Playboy Playmate for November 2003. How could a girl as gorgeous as Divini Rae have escaped our attention until 2003? Maybe the fact that she spent much of her life in a remote Alaskan fishing village has something to do with it. “The only way to reach my village is by plane or boat in the summer,” Divini says. “I felt a little cut off. Most other kids had TVs, but we could pick up only two channels there anyway.” Despite the long Alaskan winters, Divini grew up with a disposition as sunny as her name: “My mom told me that the first thing she thought when I was born was that I was like a divine ray of sunshine.” Growing up in a home with no running water or electricity, Divini became an avid reader and graduated early from high school. Bree Olson appears on the cover of the August edition of Playboy Magazine, sharing some of the details with her short lived life with Charlie Sheen and his mad life style. Bree Olson has been well known for her porn career, but shot to fame when she join Charlie Sheen as one of his “girlfriends” You can see why Charlie would add this hot little sexpot to his harem in the pictures we have below.

The following is an excerpt from the interview compiled by Gavin Edwards for Playboy.

“I’m still a goddess,” insists Bree Olson. “I’m just not Charlie’s goddess.”

Born Rachel Oberlin, Bree is a 24-year-old vegan from Indiana. She says her favorite book is Lolita; she owns a cat named Dr. Sniffles. So how did she catch Charlie Sheen’s eye and become known across America as one of “the goddesses,” his live-in girlfriends? “I imagine it was my movies,” Bree says with a shy smile. Right—she’s also a porn star who has appeared in more than 250 adult films.

Late last year Sheen—at the time the leading man on the top-rated prime-time television comedy Two and a Half Men—contacted Bree, whom he had never met, through a friend and invited her to his house. A visit of a few hours led to lots of romantic text messages. Which led to a weekend in Vegas that was all over the gossip columns. Which led to a three-way cohabitation at Sheen’s Hollywood compound—Sheen, his girlfriend Natalie “Natty” Kenly and Bree.

When Bree met Sheen, he was doing a lot of drugs. After being rushed to the hospital with “abdominal pains” in late January, he rehabilitated at home. Bree carefully states that after she moved in with him at his place, now dubbed Sober Valley Lodge, she never saw him using. According to the media portrayal of Sheen and his goddesses, it was all about the sex. Or was it?

This much is clear: Sheen swept Bree off her feet. “He’s intelligent, he’s charismatic, he’s superfunny,” says Bree. “And he’s good in bed. I mean, he’s had a lot of practice.” It’s not that Sheen was kinky—Bree got enough of that on the job, she says. He was “gentle and considerate.” Bree, who won best anal sex scene at the 2008 AVN Awards, says that when the cameras aren’t rolling, her favorite position is missionary. “I like a guy on top. I like to lie back and enjoy myself.”

Bree’s libido is no put-on. “I’m as horny as a dude but in a cute chick’s body,” she says. But once Sheen’s career started to unravel, Bree landed on the back burner.

According to Bree, many of the catchphrases come from Sheen’s favorite movie, Apocalypse Now. Although the film stars his dad, Martin Sheen, Charlie’s rhetoric appears to have been borrowed from the Marlon Brando character, the dangerously unhinged Colonel Kurtz.

Off they went across the country, appearing together onstage. In April, after a couple of weeks on the poorly received My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat Is Not an Option tour, Bree decided she had spent enough time living in a circus. She flew back to Indiana from Toronto without saying good-bye to Sheen. It was reported that she broke up with him via text message, but she says she left him a note (along with a six-figure Patek Philippe watch he had loaned her), which she quotes from memory: “C, I’m not comfortable here anymore. I’m going home. I wish you the best on the rest of your tour. (Here’s your watch.)”

Bree now has her own apartment in Los Angeles and has stopped making adult films. She wants to become a straight actress. It’s a recent decision: While on tour she was watching DVDs of True Blood in her hotel room and started rehearsing lines in the bathroom mirror.

The exhaustive search for our 50th Anniversary Playmate took us all over North America, as we feverishly collected test shots of nearly 10,000 hopefuls. This Miss January not only needed to shine alongside the classic beauties of Playboy’s past but also had to represent the ideal for the next half century of Centerfolds.

Colleen moved to California 10 years ago after a childhood spent on one of Alaska’s tiny Aleutian Islands. “I lived on a fishing boat while my dad built a beautiful house for us on Pelican Island, where about 300 people live,” she says. “There were no cars, no fruit — we had to drink Tang and powdered milk. It was wild.”

Though Miss January now resides in more cosmopolitan Los Angeles, she hasn’t necessarily given up the wild life. You may recognize Colleen from music videos by Crazy Town, Blues Traveler and Smash Mouth. She also keeps the music pumping as a DJ spinning at L.A. clubs and as a guest DJ at events like MTV’s spring break special in Cancún. “A few years ago my boyfriend at the time gave me a hundred records, and I borrowed my friend’s turntable and started playing around,” she says. “Music is the only thing that has ever given me chills through my body. I change my style every year, so I don’t specialize in one type of music. I’ve done hip-hop, jungle, disco, reggae and techno. There are so many different ways you can blend music. If you feel it, the people on the dance floor are going to feel it.”

Colleen is taking psychology classes, and in her spare time she likes to wakeboard and snowboard or comb vintage record stores to add to her formidable vinyl collection. She’s got the beat, and she wants her men to pick it up, too. “If a guy doesn’t like music, it kind of puts a damper on things,” she says. “It’s nice to sit in someone’s room and play records for a guy who is going to like them. I’m looking for a man who is fun and spontaneous — someone who won’t take me out on a date and make me think about where to go. I like a man with a plan, for sure.”

As the 50th Anniversary Playmate, Colleen’s plan is to keep dancing to her own rhythm. “Everyone is put here to do something,” she says. “Your subconscious tells you the things that you love to do, but a lot of people put those things aside. I think if you stick to the things you love, nine times out of 10, circumstances are going to go your way and you will live a happy life.”
