Nicole Whitehead is the Playboy Playmate for May 2004. Licensed pilot Nicole Whitehead — yes, she flies airplanes — is absolutely fearless. “The first time I flew a plane was also the first time I went skydiving,” says the 23-year-old. “I literally dived out the plane door — they couldn’t open it fast enough. When I was free-falling I could see all this amazing scenery at one time — the ocean, the city and the area where the NASA shuttles take off. It was so pretty, I think I started to cry.” Back on solid ground, Nicole, with ample Southern charm (she’s from Alabama and lives in Florida), explained to the pilot that while skydiving was a trip, she would be even more excited actually flying the plane. How could he resist? “He took me up and let me take the controls,” she says. “It was the best day I ever had. I knew right then that I had to fly for a living.” Nicole earned her pilot’s license in August 2003 and is currently chalking up solo flight hours.
Meanwhile, to help pay for flight school, she works at a local bar (most requested drink: Alabama slammer), models (you may have spotted her on the 2001 cover of Playboy’s Natural Beauties special edition) and steals the spotlight in music videos (in Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs,” she dances — or bangs — herself into a frenzy). While definitely a girl on the rise, Nicole isn’t going after red carpet megafame. “I would be perfectly happy flying other celebrities around the world rather than being one myself,” she says.

Cody: I’m an I-Promise peer mentor, a member of… the American Advertising Federation and I play intramural coed soccer.
Playboy: So you like sports? Which Illini teams do you follow?
Cody: The best experience would have to be football or basketball. I’ve been to both games. There’s usually a bunch of drunk, rowdy people, so that makes it fun.
Playboy: How are the campus parties?
Cody: I’ve been to some crazy theme parties like White Trash Bash, black light parties, Boats and Hos and Bikinis and Martinis. Partying on Unofficial St. Patty’s Day is the best, though. Everyone and their mom skip class and starts drinking at 8 a.m. until they pass out around 8 p.m. There’s an endless sea of green people all over the main strip on campus and green beer everywhere.

They said, ‘But you live in Chicago. What are you doing here in Denver?’ I told them, ‘That’s how dedicated I am!’” As for her future, she says, “I expect a lot from myself this year. I see my job as promoting Playboy and natural beauty to the best of my abilities. A lot of girls would die to be in my shoes right now, and I feel so blessed to have this opportunity.”

With a reboot of the 1968 sci-fi classic Barbarella in development, we pay homage to the original interstellar sex romp with the gorgeous Chelsea Salmon for Playboy Magazine May 2011. Barbarella’s charm lies in its goofy, sexy and affectionate spirit. Its heroine starts out in a world that has banished violence and sexual inhibition—hence the striptease, which is prelude to a conversation with the president. In this utopian regime, where “neurotic irresponsibility” is a thing of the past, erotic “reciprocity” is achieved by taking a pill and touching hands with a partner. It is only when Barbarella travels to the distant planet of Tau Ceti, in search of a renegade inventor named Durand-Durand and his Positronic Ray, that she is initiated into more strenuous forms of intimacy. Her first encounter is with a bounty hunter whose pectoral toupee is a wonder of neoprimitive manscaping, and her most meaningful relationship is with a depressive, flightless angel named Pygar, who regains the use of his wings after making love with her.
“She’s the only comedienne I can think of who is sexiest when she is funniest,” Pauline Kael wrote about Jane Fonda. This mixture of playfulness and lust lifts Barbarella out of the realm of exploitation into something much stranger and more fun. In the context of Fonda’s career, Barbarella is an oddity. And it is also an anomaly in the annals of cinematic science fiction, which has, for the most part, followed in the earnest, allegorical, sexless footsteps of 2001. But Barbarella herself endures—as an early action heroine, as a space-age sex symbol and above all as a reminder that the role of humanity in the cosmos is not to take ourselves too seriously.

Dalene arrived in Los Angeles with a bang, but not the type she expected. Laurie Jo Fetter is the Playboy Playmate for May 2003. Though being Centerfold is a highwater mark in Laurie’s modeling career, this isn’t the first time she’s graced the pages of a major publication. “I remember getting the cover of Sew News, a national sewing magazine, when I was 11. It was the coolest thing at that age!” she laughs. “Acting is my passion, however. My high school had an incredible theater program, and I took voice lessons for six years. I started acting in plays when I was eight and I sang and danced. Since I arrived in Los Angeles, I’ve done an independent film and hope to do more.” For good measure, Laurie is also getting her real estate license and taking classes at UCLA. “I graduated from high school early and went right into my career, so I’m at a point where I really need the mental stimulation,” she says.
Miss May admits her career isn’t the only thing that prompted her shotgun trip to the West Coast. “I met my boyfriend in LA before I moved. Sometimes you look into someone’s eyes and they’re kind of blank, and you don’t really know what is going on. He looked at me and it was kind of freaky because I felt like he was looking right through me. I think I’ve slept at my house twice since we got together — in fact most, if not all, of my stuff is at his place. I have my own house but I think all that’s left there are one pair of shoes and a bed.” As for her future, Laurie has adopted a philosophical approach. “You get dealt so many different cards every day, and you don’t know where you’re going to end up tomorrow. It’s a tough business, and I don’t have any illusions about it. But I would love to be a working actress for the rest of my life. Entertaining is what I was born to do.”

She told him her daughter’s dream was to be a Playboy Centerfold and asked him for an evaluation. Stern did not become America’s favorite shock jock by being slow to seize opportunity. “I’ve got to get this broad on the phone, at least,” he said. “My dream in high school was to do tons of coke, but my mom didn’t go out and score for me.” Stern was joking about the last part (we think), but soon Jillian and her mom had trekked from Washington, Missouri to the Stern show in New York.
