I’m warning you,” says Stacy Fuson as she sits down to a mozzarella salad and a plate of pot stickers in a Sunset Boulevard restaurant, “I eat a lot.” But, then, she needs the nourishment. Ever since moving to Los Angeles from Tacoma, Washington two years ago, Stacy has been on the go — modeling, doing shows for Ocean Pacific swimwear, traveling the world, taking acting classes, appearing in a music video and on a couple of episodes of Baywatch, calling her mother every night and occasionally checking in with her boyfriend, who, inconveniently, lives in France.
A veteran model at the age of 20 (she started appearing in beauty contests when she was four), Stacy is enjoying her whirlwind life and focusing on an acting career. Of course, she finds time to play, too. “You should tell your readers,” she announces midbite, “that I love my bird.”
Q: Your bird?
A: My cockatiel, Pretty Bird. I love her. She’s so smart. She can pick up her claw and wave at you. She’s tame, but to get a bird to be that tame, you have to spend a lot of time with it.
Q: So how do you spend quality time with a cockatiel?
A: I take her into the shower with me. She sits on the shower ledge, and I splash water on her. She shakes her wings and acts like she’s taking a bath.
Q: How did a girl from Tacoma end up in Los Angeles?
A: I’d always wanted to move to L.A. After I graduated from high school, I just got up one morning and said, “Mom, I’m leaving for L.A. in a couple of weeks.” I felt I had to do it. I came here when I was 18, and soon after that I was on the cover of the October 1997 Playboy.
Q: Sounds easy.
A: It was strange. I had done a Playmate test shoot, and they asked me to stand in for another model for a lighting test. I did that, and then they had a meeting and asked, “Do you want to work tomorrow?” I said, “Sure, what will I be doing?” They said, “Well, we’re going to put you on the October cover.” I was shocked.
Q: Had you ever thought about posing for Playboy?
A: It had crossed my mind. My freshman year in high school, I got a Rabbit Head decal. I’ve thought about being in the magazine ever since. [Laughs] That sticker is still on my bedroom door.
Q: Were you popular in high school?
A: I was an ordinary girl, I guess. Mostly, I wanted to hang out with my older brother, who would help me any time I had a problem. Sometimes I had crushes on his friends, but they thought of me as just Doug’s little sister.
Q: What are they going to think of Doug’s little sister now?
A: They’ll probably be surprised. One of my brother’s friends used to make fun of my boobs, saying I should wear Band-Aids on them. Before high school, I didn’t have much there. But then I started to fill out, and one day he was like, “Wow, what happened to you?” So now I rub it in: “Didn’t you make fun of me because I didn’t have anything there?”
Q: Do you miss Washington?
A: I miss fishing. My family would go fishing where the Columbia River flows into the ocean. Everybody would go: my mom and dad, grandma and grandpa, aunt and uncle. I loved it. If I ever have enough money, I’m going to buy a boat and take my family fishing — to that same spot.

Natalia Sokolova is the Playboy Playmate for April 1999. Natalia Sokolova has come a long way. Born and raised in Moscow, Miss April journeyed from the shadow of the Kremlin to the pages of Playboy by way of the University of Maryland and the Hawaiian Tropic I nternational competition in Las Vegas. But the trip wasn’t easy: Five years ago, just after beginning her freshman year at Maryland, Natalia was in an auto accident that left her facing life in a wheelchair. “I returned from the dead,” she says of her remarkable recovery. Now determined to explore her new life, our statuesque Russian beauty delivered her hard-earned wisdom over lunch in West Los Angeles: “My great-grandmother’s favorite saying was, ‘There’s no such word as can’t. There are only such words as don’t want to.’ That became my motto.”
Playboy: How did the accident happen?
Natalia: I fell asleep in the backseat of the car, and after that I remember only flashes. I woke up in the hospital. First the doctors thought I might not make it because I’d lost so much blood, then they said I would never walk again, that at best, I’d spend my life in a wheelchair.
Playboy: How did you take that news?
Natalia: It was a total nightmare, being 17 years old and not being able to do anything. Before that I was very athletic. For me to be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life seemed impossible. My attitude was, I’m going to walk again, or I’m not going to live.
Playboy: When did you start to walk again?
Natalia: It was six months until I took my first steps. Even now I feel some effects of the accident, but I am getting stronger. I’m not all the way back, but I can work out every day for an hour or so. I never had the time to do that before, because I was always so busy with school.
Playboy: Why did you shift gears from studying to modeling?
Natalia: I had never really thought about modeling. I’m an honors student, and I thought about going right back to graduate school to get my MBA. But also, I wanted to take a break, to live a little. For the past four years, I have had no time off from school or work. And then modeling opportunities came along. Everything in my life has been circumstantial.
Playboy: How did you feel when you were approached by Playboy?
Natalia: It took me a month to consider it. I was raised conservatively. My family is ancient, like a royal family. It can be traced back to the 12th century. So even though I’ve been on my own since I was 16, it was instilled in me that I could never even consider something like Playboy. But now I’m glad I chose to do it.
Playboy: So are you in America for good now?
Natalia: I’m definitely going to stay in the U.S., and someday I want to own a business here. I miss my family, my dog and my friends, and I love Moscow because it’s so beautiful. But I also love California. I love the weather. And I’m near the water. In Russia there are no oceans like the ones here, and it’s so cold. I talked to my mom in Moscow, and it was -20 degrees Centigrade. When I walk outside and the sky is gray, it’s depressing. I like sunshine and blue skies. If I can just steal my dog from my mom, I’ll be happy.

Erika Eleniak is sitting in the living room of her mother’s airy suburban home in San Fernando Valley. Of course, in a manner of speaking, it’s also her fiancé’s house. And to cloud the issue further, the house technically belongs to a man who is both Erika’s future father-in-law and her potential stepdad. Confused? “I know it’s bizarre,” confesses Erika with a shrug. “I have a very interesting life.” That’s true. Almost everything about Erika is interesting. Take, for example, her career. As she sits, wearing a floppy straw hat, pink T-shirt and shorts in a living room jointly claimed by her mom, boyfriend and future father-in-law, she talks animatedly about Baywatch, a two-hour NBC-TV pilot about lifeguards that she recently finished filming. In it, she plays a rookie lifeguard, along with actors David Hasselhoff and Parker Stevenson, and if NBC likes the pilot, Erika will have a regular berth on a prime-time series. If not, as she points out with equanimity, it’s just another job. Most fledgling actors would fret about their show’s future, but not Erika. At 19, she’s a pro — with nine years of modeling assignments and acting jobs on her résumé, including a role as Elliot’s girlfriend in E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. Besides, Erika, after a rocky start in life, has learned to take her problems in stride. Those problems began when she was young and her parents divorced, leaving her on her own much of the time. “I chose to be the girl you don’t want to mess with,” she explains. “I was into heavy metal. I didn’t have a lot of direction in my life, so I partied too hard.” In the San Fernando Valley, as in many other places, if you party too hard, you pay the price with drug and alcohol problems. “I was going through so much pain,” Erika recalls. “I had a boyfriend I had no business being with, and I felt not good enough, abandoned.” But when she was 17, someone new entered her life. On wheels. His name was Steve Ferguson, and he’d been a quadriplegic since a diving accident seven years earlier. The two ran in the same social circles, and Erika had definitely noticed Ferguson, but not just because he was wheelchair bound. “I’m like most of us when it comes to people in wheelchairs,” she says. “I didn’t want to stare, but he’s very good-looking.”
Two years ago, after breaking up with her other boyfriend, she ran into Ferguson on the Venice boardwalk. “I guess I was a brazen little brat,” she recalls with a laugh, “because I walked up to him and said ‘I think you’re really cute and I just wanted to say hi.’ ” Ferguson, who is 23, made some big changes in Erika’s life. First, he introduced her to A.A., and she has not been drinking for more than two years. Then, he and Erika plotted to introduce his father to her mother. “Why don’t you have your dad drop you off at my house one day?” suggested Erika. “Boom!” she says now. “That’s all it took.” The two have been an item ever since, and Iris, Erika’s mother, now rents a house owned by Robert, Steve’s father. “It can get a little claustrophobic,” admits Erika. When her first fling at living with Steve didn’t go smoothly, she decided to take a breather and move out. However, her room at her mother’s had been Steve’s room while he was growing up, and just sitting among his memorabilia was painful. Besides, his father was a constant presence around the house, so Erika found other, though equally illogical, living arrangements; she moved in with Steve’s mother. Needless to say, that didn’t help her forget Steve, and it provoked not a little sarcasm in her own mother: “Sure,” she cracked, ” go and stay with my boyfriend’s ex-wife.” Eventually, Steve and Erika ironed out their differences and Erika moved back in with him, but she recalls that period with wide-eyed amazement. “It was so weird,” she says, showing a flair for understatement.
Now, they’re one big Eighties type of extended family. If Erika and Steve get married first, which is likely, her father-in-law will be dating her mother. If Iris and Robert tie the knot first, Erika will end up marrying her stepbrother. “I’m getting used to it,” she says. Despite the wheelchair and the soap-opera family arrangements, Erika and Steve lead a rather typical life. “More than any other boyfriend I’ve been with, Steve takes me places and does active things. He has a boat and races it, and he drives a van. We’re just like any other couple, except that Steve doesn’t stand up when we talk, he sits down. And I get the common question, ‘Can he have sex?’ Yeah, absolutely. Steve has taught me so much,” she says. “I’ve never laughed so much in my life. From the time I get up in the morning to the time I go to sleep at night, I’m laughing.” She is also very busy. Her manager keeps sending her on auditions (just in case Baywatch doesn’t pan out), her fiancé keeps taking her on trips and she has scarcely enough time to hang out at her mother’s, where she can do her laundry and visit with her 15-year-old sister and talk things over with Mom. “A.A. has really made me aware of my feelings. I don’t want to hurt anymore and I don’t want to be under anyone’s thumb. I want to take charge of my own life and I want to be a good person. I’ve already started acting that way.”

It’s a clear, cold midnight in Austin, Texas and we have goose bumps as we walk along the lake, not because of the temperature but because Jennifer was talking about finding her soul mate at the precise moment the heavenly light caught her eye. She considers it a sign.
This 24-year-old model, actor and hotel concierge (who once served Quentin Tarantino breakfast at five A.M., “when he was coming in from a night on the town after a B-movie film festival in Austin”) believes in past lives. In the U.K., Tamara Ecclestone is known as the Billion $$ Girl. She’s famous as a television presenter, a dashing reality-TV star and heiress to an auto-racing fortune. (Her father, Bernie, is the U.K.’s 12th-richest man, according to Forbes, and the CEO of Formula One, the world’s most lucrative and popular racing circuit.) Tamara is also famous for her jet-setting, her nights out on the town in London, her recent engagement to a stockbroker boyfriend—all delicious tabloid fodder.
So aside from these photos, what else should Americans know about her? “Every time I come here,” Tamara says, “people say to me, ‘Oh, you’re the European Paris Hilton.’ ” She wrinkles her nose. “I’m the opposite of that.” Tamara says she hits the clubs only one night a week. Her focus is on launching lifestyle businesses in the future. “I know I’m never going to be as successful as my dad,” she says, “but I get bored doing nothing. I couldn’t go from vacation to vacation and have no motivation.”
Tamara, dressed in pink polka-dot pajamas, is sitting on a couch in her deluxe suite at the Peninsula hotel in Beverly Hills. Outside her room are multiple layers of private security, dramatically raising the hotel’s quotient of wireless earpieces and glowering expressions. In Los Angeles, Tamara would ordinarily stay with her sister Petra, who bought Aaron Spelling’s mansion two years ago for $85 million—with more than a hundred rooms, it probably has enough space. The best thing about her sister’s house? “Probably her bowling alley,” Tamara says. “Visiting her, I’ve gotten really good at bowling.” But today Petra is back in London, so Tamara will have to wait for another trip to pick up that spare.
So why is she posing for playboy? For one thing, to please millions of our readers around the globe. “I don’t have a problem with nakedness,” she says cheerfully. Her mother, Slavica, is a beautiful former fashion model from Croatia who did her share of nude shoots back in the day. “She’d be a bit of a hypocrite if she told me not to,” Tamara says. Tamara’s valuable skin has some discreet tattoos (so discreet, in fact, that you can’t see them here). The most meaningful is a Marilyn Monroe quote: “Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.” She also has a tattoo of her own name inside a tiara. What’s up with that? “People always joke that I’m a princess,” she says, flashing her billion-dollar smile. “I thought I’d make the joke first.”
A dedicated patron of the arts, Tamara lent her face to an anti-fur campaign for PETA, and has raised millions of dollars for animal welfare and her local children’s hospital. With beauty, brains, and more money than the Queen of England, Tamara is sitting pretty – but she’s business-minded, determined to succeed, and her sights are set on Los Angeles. We’d say that the cover of Playboy Magazine is a good start. Not that she needs one.
