Nichole Van Croft is no ordinary Southern belle, and it’s written all over her skin. Her German ancestors introduced the use of herbs for beauty purposes in Florida, a practice that has rubbed off on Miss October. “I read medical books all the time,” says Nichole, a native of Jacksonville. “I must have 10 zillion herb and physiology books from my mom. But even before I knew my family’s history I had a little garden and grew peppermint and other herbs. I look younger because I take really good care of my skin and use natural stuff like buttermilk and cornmeal on my face.” Sounds delicious. But even though Nichole wants to launch her own line of skin-care products someday, don’t get the impression that this future beauty entrepreneur is all primp and no play. “I played every sport in high school: volleyball, basketball, and I even broke my collarbone playing football,” Nichole explains. “I was voted homecoming queen and it was such a dilemma because I was playing in the homecoming basketball game. I gave up my crown so I could play basketball.”

Lindsey Vuolo confesses she’s in Playboy because her friend Kristy kept encouraging her to submit pictures. “She said, ‘I bet you any amount of money they’ll call you,’” says Lindsey. “I finally told her to take the pictures, send everything in and put her name as the contact because I didn’t want to deal with the disappointment, since I had only modeled for a local swimsuit calendar before. One month after Kristy sent in the photos, she called me and started screaming. She has a really good eye for this. I think she’s living vicariously through me.”

Miss November grew up outside of Philadelphia. She’s now a college student majoring in communications, with a business minor. Lindsey recently joined a sorority, a change of pace from her teenage years of hanging out with the guys. “When I first pledged, I thought I’d made the worst mistake. But now I have 60 awesome new girlfriends,” she says. When her nose isn’t buried in textbooks, 20-year-old Lindsey pours drinks to help pay for school. When we questioned how an underage student gets to sling shots at a college bar, Lindsey giggled. “You only have to be 18 to serve alcohol in my state,” she assures us. “The people at the bar are like my family. One time I put on my bathing suit and had to dance in a cage for four hours, which felt more like four years. There are girls dancing around poles or up on the bar. People act crazy every night.”

Football fanatic Heather Knox won’t have to travel far to watch this year’s Super Bowl. The game’s host city, Indianapolis, happens to be her hometown. Better still, as the newly minted Miss January 2012, she will be front and center at all of Playboy’s Super Bowl weekend festivities. “Getting to watch the game from a suite at Lucas Oil Stadium will be the coolest thing ever,” she says. “I keep forgetting how many opportunities being Miss January is going to bring me.” The diehard Colts fan became a pigskin expert while working as a waitress at an Indiana sports bar. “I learned the game for the benefit of my bank account,” she explains. “By understanding what was happening, I knew when not to interrupt a table of guys.” She proved to be a quick study; until recently she was the only undefeated member of her fantasy football league. “My league is called Show Me Your TDs–say it fast and you’ll realize a guy came up with the name.” Heather has also developed her own call–”Ay yi yi yi yi!”–that she unleashes whenever she attends Colts games so as to better distract the visiting team’s offense on third down. She is planning a similar shout of joy for when the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve. “I’m going to be really excited, because it will mean it’s my Playmate month!” she exclaims. “Without a doubt, 2012 will be the most amazing year of my life.”
