Sandra Hubby may be the only woman we know who is equally comfortable riding a jet to a modeling assignment in a far-flung locale and riding a tractor back on the farm. “I learned how to drive a tractor when I was 15,” says the 25-year-old Ohio native. “My friends and I were always outside playing in the woods, building forts and that sort of thing. Now I live on a 100-acre farm without a neighbor in sight, so this summer I was driving around the whole spread, cutting hay.”
Although Miss March says she started daydreaming about being a model at the age of nine, she wasn’t exactly the type to priss and preen. “Growing up I never cared about looking perfect every day,” she says. “I would rather wear jeans and hang out with the guys.” After high school Sandra even planned to become a Marine but did a career 180 just before she had to take her final oath and ship out. “I wanted to do stuff they wouldn’t let a female do, like drive a tank,” she says. “I was hoping to become a helicopter crew chief, but in my heart I really wanted to model and maybe act.” The Corps’ loss was our gain. Sandra has since earned her showbiz stripes working for Hawaiian Tropic and appearing in the Meg Ryan movie Against the Ropes. Still, she never strays far from the country for too long. “I grew up raising and training horses, and there are about 80 on my farm now,” she says. “My horse, Angus, is there and we’ve bonded. He’s a good boy — I treat him as if he were my kid.”

Licensed pilot Nicole Whitehead — yes, she flies airplanes — is absolutely fearless. “The first time I flew a plane was also the first time I went skydiving,” says the 23-year-old. “I literally dived out the plane door — they couldn’t open it fast enough. When I was free-falling I could see all this amazing scenery at one time — the ocean, the city and the area where the NASA shuttles take off. It was so pretty, I think I started to cry.” Back on solid ground, Nicole, with ample Southern charm (she’s from Alabama and lives in Florida), explained to the pilot that while skydiving was a trip, she would be even more excited actually flying the plane. How could he resist? “He took me up and let me take the controls,” she says. “It was the best day I ever had. I knew right then that I had to fly for a living.” Nicole earned her pilot’s license in August 2003 and is currently chalking up solo flight hours.
Meanwhile, to help pay for flight school, she works at a local bar (most requested drink: Alabama slammer), models (you may have spotted her on the 2001 cover of Playboy’s Natural Beauties special edition) and steals the spotlight in music videos (in Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs,” she dances — or bangs — herself into a frenzy). In September 1997, Playboy went back to check up on Karen, and take some hot new photos, which have finally been released in the Cyberclub. It all started in 1984. Karen Velez was a secretary in Miami who had always wondered what she would look like as a Playmate. As we announced last week, Claire Sinclair is the Playboy Playmate of the Year 2011. The newest pinup queen pays tribute to the glamour royalty of yore. Bettie Page. Dita Von Teese. And now Claire Sinclair—our 2011 Playmate of the Year and the latest addition to the pantheon of pinup queens. Claire wouldn’t have it any other… way. “Pinup girls are timeless,” says the curvaceous 20-year-old, a brunette bundle of brains and beauty. “Dita is contemporary pinup royalty, and Bettie has been one of my biggest inspirations because she was everything a pinup should be—sexy, funny and approachable.”
And so we wanted to bring these quintessential pinup qualities to life in the pictures before you, with, of course, a playful nod to the work of legendary glamour painter Gil Elvgren, the so-called Norman Rockwell of cheesecake. “I’m all about vintage, so I loved the idea,” Claire says. “I mean, getting to swing 10 feet in the air to replicate a 1950s pinup? That’s a dream come true. I’m a lucky, lucky girl.”
Claire’s ascent to Playmate of the Year has been swift and sure. One week after the native Angeleno first posed for our in-house pinup painter Olivia De Berardinis, in fall 2009, she met Hef, who promptly asked her to test shoot for Playmate and ultimately named her Miss October 2010. Next, Claire moved into the Bunny House with fellow PMOYs Hope Dworaczyk and Jayde Nicole and a gaggle of other Playmates, an event captured by E! cameras for the network’s August special The Bunny House. And that was merely a warm-up. Soon thereafter, producers from the fabled burlesque cabaret Crazy Horse Paris invited Claire to the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to guest star in the stateside version of their revue. Not two weeks later, Bettie Page Clothing anointed her its official spokesmodel. “Becoming a Playmate opened up so many cool opportunities,” says Claire, who stayed with Holly Madison in her Planet Hollywood suite after performing with the Crazy Horse showgirls. There, E! cameras found her yet again as she became part of Holly’s World. “I knew this was my shot, so I worked my ass off. I even zip-lined down Fremont Street in a Crazy Horse Paris T-shirt for publicity. If they had asked, I would have bungee jumped off the Stratosphere!”
In Vegas she found a kindred spirit in 83-year-old burlesque starlet Tempest Storm. “I love Tempest. She co-starred in one of the only color films Bettie Page ever made, Teaserama. In it there’s a scene where Tempest wakes up and Bettie dresses her. By today’s standards it seems quite innocent, but at the time it was big-time frisky. Back then Tempest was known as the Girl With the Fabulous Front because she had these ginormous boobs, which she had insured for $1 million. Isn’t that fantastic? I don’t think I could be in better hands when it comes to learning about burlesque.”
When it comes to everything else, however, Hef is her numero uno guru. “I trust him with my life and career,” says Claire. She hopes that career includes more burlesque and lots of hosting, acting and writing gigs. (A book fiend, Claire counts David Sedaris and Chuck Palahniuk among her favorite authors.) “There’s so much I want to explore, because I’m curious about everything!” she bubbles forth with her trademark exuberance. “I was determined to become Playmate of the Year, and now that I have, I feel as successful as any 20-year-old could be. I’m so excited about it. I promise you that I’m going to liven it up as the pinuppiest Playmate of the Year you could ever imagine. This is just the beginning.”

Scarlett Keegan is the Playboy Playmate for September 2004. When we meet Scarlett Keegan, the first thing she wants to get off her chest is that hers isn’t a stage name. “My mom’s favorite movie is Gone With the Wind,” she says. “I didn’t wake up one day and say, ‘I want to be a star. I’m going to change my name to make it sound sexy.’”
Miss September has been acting and modeling since she was 12, but her cheeks turn as red as her hair when she recounts her first acting job — in a toilet-paper commercial at the age of three. “I didn’t understand how filming worked,” she says. “I thought I was going to be trapped inside the television. You can be anyone you want to be here if you have the talent and will to follow your dreams.” After learning that Playboy would not be staging any immediate casting calls in Chicago–our hometown and Sasha’s adopted hometown–she followed her dream of becoming a Playmate to Denver. “The people at the casting laughed. They said, ‘But you live in Chicago. What are you doing here in Denver?’ I told them, ‘That’s how dedicated I am!’” As for her future, she says, “I expect a lot from myself this year. I see my job as promoting Playboy and natural beauty to the best of my abilities. A lot of girls would die to be in my shoes right now, and I feel so blessed to have this opportunity.”

Cara Zavaleta is the Playboy Playmate of November 2004. There was a time when Miss November, Cara Zavaleta, wanted her MTV fame. You may remember her as the wide-eyed, enthusiastic beauty from Road Rules: South Pacific and later The Gauntlet, on which Road Rules and Real World alums faced off and hooked up while pursuing a cash prize. Christina Santiago is the Playboy Playmate for August 2002, and this gorgeous brunette won the crown of Playboy Playmate of the Year for 2003. The 20-year-old Chicago native’s striking features helped her become a professional model, and she appeared in Fox’ Girl Next Door: The Search for a Playboy Centerfold. “I didn’t feel uncomfortable, because I’m content with my body, and I’m not afraid to show it.” She was even less shy around the cameramen recording her every move for two weeks — much of the footage was deemed too hot for television. “We couldn’t talk to the crew at all,” she says. “The only thing that we could do when the cameramen left the room, which was probably mean on our part, was to purposely do something outrageous so they’d run back to the room trying to get to their cameras. I made out with this girl on the show, but I don’t think you see that on network TV.” So all signs point to the contestants’ getting along, right? “Everyone thought there would be catfights. Ida Ljungqvist is the Playboy Playmate for March 2008, and of course she won the title of Playboy Playmate of the Year 2009. It is very remiss of me not to have posted already about one of the hottest playmates ever, so I better make up for it with some of her hottest pictures, and maybe post a couple extra!
Playmate of the Year Sara Jean Underwood wasn’t shopping for talent when she walked into Bebe in Beverly Hills, but in 26-year-old sales specialist Ida (pronounced “EE-duh”) Ljungqvist she spotted a must-have item. Sara and Ida got to chatting, and our ad hoc scout realized this one was more than just an exotic beauty with a flawless figure. As Sara would later tell Holly Madison, Ida has the spark and flair of a Playmate. Soon thereafter the Girls Next Door showed up unannounced at the clothing boutique, camera crew in tow. “I was in total shock when they asked me to pose,” Ida says. “I’m kind of a thrill seeker. Throw me in–I’ll sink or swim!”
Such fearlessness is hardly surprising in a woman who lived in more countries before the age of 18 than most people will ever visit. She was born in Tanzania to a Swedish father and a Tanzanian mother and, because of her father’s work with UNICEF, grew up in Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, France, the U.K., Sweden and Denmark. She speaks three languages (English, Swedish and Swahili), has a degree in fashion design and marketing and plans to study economics, among other subjects. Ida devotes a lot of time to charity work, a passion she inherited from Pops. “I’m a really positive person,” she says. “My dad, he’s, like, saving the world, so good luck to whoever decides to marry me! He’ll have some big shoes to fill. I love Playboy because I get to meet people from all over the planet.”
