African Supermodel Iman features in the November Edition of Playboy Magazine. Over the past few years, photographer Peter Beard has enjoyed a revival as his distinctive oeuvre has attracted the attention of a new generation of curators and gallerists. Back in 1985, he went to Africa for PLAYBOY to shoot the incredible Somali model known as Iman. By that time Iman was already an established supermodel, having appeared numerous times in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar Many of the photos on these pages were shot at Beard’s Hog Ranch near Nairobi. Beard’s inﬂuence on a number of contemporary artists and photographers is hard to deny.
Back in 1985 as famed supermodel Iman returns to her native Africa after ten years as Manhattan’s hottest model. From the urban jungle of New York to the sweeping plains of Kenya, consummate professional Iman makes herself right at home – and next to a several-thousand-pound elephant, it’s no small feat. “I’m a model and an American citizen,” she says, “but I’m a Somali first.”
